We will learn and apply the five basic rules and guiding principles of how and why dry stone walls function and last. We will also introduce shaping stones and the use and care of tools. Over the course of two days we will learn how to build a cheekend, (also known as a wall end or wall head), which is used to terminate the end of a dry stone wall. We will apply the five basic rules and guiding principles of how and why dry stone structures are successful, and learn the methods for laying out and planning the dimensions of a wall. During this course we will spend a moderate amount of time learning to evaluate and shape stones. This workshop follows the curriculum of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain (DSWA-GB).
